History of Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve Montreal

Gilles Villeneuve was the first canadian hired as an offical team driver Formula 1 Auto Racing. He was born in Bertheville, Quebec. January 18 1950. He started his Formula 1 Grand Prix on board a Ford-powered McLaren, at the Silverstone race track in England. From 1978 to 1982, Villeneuve entered 64 races for Ferrari and won 6 times. He won for the first time at 1978 Canadian Grand Prix, on the Ile Notre-Dame Circuit in Montreal. His appearance in Canadian Grand Prix between 1978-1981, he earned points by finishing 1st, 2nd, 5th, and 3rd. Villeneuve died in practice session for Belgian Grand Prix, May 1982. To honor the memory of the great racer, The City of Montreal Executive Committed adopted a resulotion to rename the Ile Notre-Dame track circuit. It’s known as Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve Montreal where proudly host annual Canadian Grand Prix.
